Demopolis, Alabama
Historic Business District
The days of large retail merchant stores thriving in small southern downtowns are largely over. That does not mean, however, that historic downtowns need to be boarded up. They often just need to change their tenant base.

Such has been the story of the historic downtown business district of Demopolis. It has morphed itself from a once thriving retail center, where area citizens traveled from miles away to shop, into a workable mix of smaller niche retail stores and professional offices. The downtown area of Demopolis currently enjoys over 80% occupancy of rentable spaces. Only around a third of the spaces in the downtown district are occupied by retail merchants. Over sixty percent are professional offices, housing law offices, insurance agencies, banking and financial services, doctor offices, and company headquarters.

This mix, along with city hall, the public library, and the post office remaining downtown, has kept the historic downtown area of Demopolis a viable economic area. With the beautiful Memorial Park in the center of it, historic downtown Demopolis welcomes you to come and visit
