Demopolis has two golf courses, health/fitness clubs, a walking trail at our three hundred acre SportsPlex, a walking trail at the beautiful Foscue Park, exercise classes at the Demopolis Park and Recreation Department, exercise classes at local churches, top-notch fishing on our river system and area sloughs, and deer and turkey hunting.
Demopolis is located just south of where the Warrior River converges into the Tombigbee River. This river system is controlled by lock and dams of the U.S. Corp of Engineers, which has a regional headquarters right here in Demopolis. Bass, crappie, and river-catfish fishing is at its best along this waterway. If fishing is not for you, then you may want to use our rivers and lakes for leisurely pontoon boating, or for the faster paced-ski boating. You can keep your boat at your home or keep it at the local marina in a covered boat slip. It’s all here for you.
The city of Demopolis is home to the award-winning Tombigbee Healthcare Authority. Under the umbrella of THA, here are some of the services you will find offered:
- A 99 bed hospital
- A sleep clinic
- Home health care
- Major and minor surgery
- Geri-psych unit
- Numerous Out-Patient services
Numerous local doctor clinics work with THA to provide our area with quality healthcare. Visit THA’s web site at www.bwwmh.com
Cost of Living
Overall “cost of living” has historically been lower in smaller communities. In Alabama, homes are assessed at 10% of their value for property tax purposes. The millage rate (tax rate) is applied to the assessed value. The millage rate for Demopolis (includes State/County/City portions) is 52.5 mills. For example: If you own a home worth $175,000.00, it is assessed at 10% of its value, which would be $17,500.00. Thus, you pay $52.50 for every $1,000.00 of assessed value, so your annual property taxes would only be $918.75. (17.5 X $52.50=$918.75).
Continuing Adult Education
The campus of the Demopolis Higher Education Center is located on the grounds of our SportsPlex. It is operated under the guidance of the University of West Alabama. This state-of-the-art facility offers a wide range of college courses as well as a number of continuing adult education courses. You may call campus director Angelia L. Mance at 334-287-0174 for additional information.

A Sense of Being Away from It All Yet Still Close to Large Cities: You can enjoy all of the flavors of being in our small town, away from the stress and congestion of large urban area, yet you are only less than one hour from the much larger cities of Tuscaloosa, (home of the University of Alabama), and Meridian, Mississippi. You are less than two hours from the even larger cities of Birmingham and Montgomery.
